Fake German © John Palme 1982

1. You come out of the shower babbling away in fake German.
A G#m C#m G#m B7
But somehow I understand every word.
E G#m C#m B7
Outside in the pool, the other motel guests are laughing.
A G#m C#m B7 E
It's al-most as if they heard.
2. Quarter to twelve, time to get up and get going.
Repack the trunk. Put a new crease in our map.
If the money would hold out, I could do this forever.
Let's take the longest way possible back.
B C#m A B
refrain: Strings of light looping across the facade.
(B) C#m A B
Last night seemed to go on and on.
3. Somewhere I know there's an argument waiting
for us to get tired, but it can wait.
Right now we need to find a place for breakfast.
Let's hope they're still serving this late.
refrain: Down at the pier, the ferry is waiting to ride.
Mount Olympus is waiting on the other side.
4. Across the waves, the cold, western, sea breeze is blowing.
Everyone else is inside behind the glass.
But we're on deck, freezing and huddled together.
And yet I still want this moment to last.
refrain: Strings...
